{"id":661,"date":"2022-12-05T21:50:35","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T20:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimclarke.net\/?p=661"},"modified":"2022-12-05T21:53:03","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T20:53:03","slug":"gaslit-by-goblins-the-dictionary-definition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jimclarke.net\/index.php\/2022\/12\/05\/gaslit-by-goblins-the-dictionary-definition\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaslit by Goblins &#8211; the dictionary definition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There is dissent among the lexicographers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas last year the Oxford English Dictionary (with the somewhat American-sounding diminutive &#8216;vax&#8217;) and Merriam-Webster (with the more formal, and somehow British sounding vaccine) concurred on word of the year, this time they have diverged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the M-W, this year&#8217;s word is &#8216;gaslighting&#8217;, a not-especially-new term used to describe a kind of cruel psychological manipulation. However, the OED put their favoured options (which included a phrase <a><\/a>and a hashtag!) to a public vote, and came up with &#8216;goblin mode&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is &#8216;goblin mode&#8217;, you may ask?
